It is not just a matter of weighing technical characteristic “pros” and “cons”. You have to think about what you really need to make your trip great. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Vehicle types in Mykonos
When it comes to selecting vehicle type (i.e. car, scooter or quad) the first thing you have to take into consideration, besides having the appropriate license, is what you are comfortable driving. Are you comfortable driving a scooter? Would you be more comfortable driving something with 4 wheels? Would you be ok driving a big Jeep around the narrow roads of the island? Do you have the experience required to drive with manual transmission?
These are some important questions you have to ask yourself in order to make a wise decision. And when we say wise – we mean safe. Just because your friends rented a scooter and drove around Mykonos as if they were born on it, doesn’t mean you would. We always think that if you are in doubt – even after hearing our recommendations, or even test driving – just choose what you feel comfortable and safe driving.
We do on a daily basis rent vehicles to people who have never driven something similar before (mainly quads), and they drive off like pros and return like pros, but we just have to mention that sometimes and some people should stick to what they know. Safety first!
Vehicle transmission type
Ok, so we mentioned earlier that you shouldn’t think about boring technicalities. However this is a crucial – but yet a simple one. DO NOT rent a car with manual transmission unless you drive it on a day to day basis. Mykonos is not a place to remember how to change gears or learn to stop and start in an uphill. Just make yourself a favor and select automatic transmission and enjoy a hassle-free drive!
Vehicle type: sizewise
If you are a couple travelling or a solo traveler you have more freedom when choosing, but in general any smaller car or quad or scooter is perfect. Bigger groups or families could also rent a couple of quads or scooters but then face the fact that you wouldn’t be travelling together. Perhaps that could be a good idea if you are looking for more freedom but if you want to spend the vacation together as a group your best choice is a minivan or a bigger car. Now, if you do not feel comfortable driving a van (we sure know it isn’t the easiest on these roads) you could opt for two smaller cars. Usually two small to medium sized standard cars are the same price as one van.
Vehicle Engine size
The bigger the engine, the more easy it will be to drive up steep hills. This section is mainly written with scooters and quads in mind but cars engine size can be important if your hotel is located on top of a steep hill as well. In general all cars can drive anywhere in Mykonos but it certainly helps if you have a little bit more power in some cases. When it comes to scooters and quad bikes though, it can be crucial with more power. So if you are planning on driving to Super Paradise, Agrari and in some cases Elia and Ornos just to name a few, make yourself AND the vehicle a favor and choose your vehicle accordingly.
Vehicle type features
Sometimes you just need to drive something convertible and cool. In that case choose a Jeep Wrangler, Suzuki Jimny or a Convertible Smart, depending on what size you need. If you want to drive something fun that you never tried before, and if you are up to it, rent a quad bike or a buggy. For best comfort and luxurious style, rent for example a Range Rover.
